In diseases where the lack of an enzyme has pathological consequences, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) often ameliorates the disease phenotype. EU research has used an enzyme approach for the devastating disease, alpha-mannosidosis.

EU funding is supporting the development of novel energy devices (i.e. conversion, storage and saving) based on hybrid materials.

Inorganic–organic hybrids are materials made from an organic and an inorganic material. When the organisation of individual components occurs at the nano scale (the scale of individual molecules and/or nano-building blocks), the resulting materials are known as hybrid nanocomposites. Hybridisation in terms of structure often results in unique physico-chemical properties, making such materials the centre of a great deal of attention.

Software, in its various manifestations, is essential to the functioning of cities. It is permeating city systems and infrastructures as well as urban management and governance. A new EU-funded project is preparing to undertake a sustained programme of research on how software makes a difference in the urban world.
