Nanoparticles are of great scientific and industrial interest as they are effectively a bridge between bulk materials and atomic or molecular structures. The NANOFATE project provided ecological risk assessments of three types of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) along the life cycle from production to waste disposal.

Effective chronic heart failure treatments should be patient-specific. To identify specific biomarkers of the disease, the BIOSTAT-CHF project aims to identify patients with a poor prognosis and analyse demographic, genetic and proteomic information.

While the diagnosis of any child or teenager with cancer is extremely traumatic, there have been huge advances in treatment; the five-year survival rate is now 80 percent in developed countries. With more young people surviving the disease, it has become increasingly important to understand the impacts treatment could have in later life. A team of European researchers is working with young survivors to establish the facts.

With a steady increase of the average life span, it is vitally important to investigate the disability and co-morbidity factors that affect the ageing process. The CHANCES project was set up to collect and analyse data for the elderly, on diverse health determinants that are fundamental for longevity and good quality of life.
