Novel HIV vaccines via novel routes

A large international consortium is set on testing novel vaccine candidates with different administration routes of vaccination for protection against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Results from the much anticipated clinical trials will determine the effectiveness of these vaccines against HIV infection.

Microbicides that protect against HIV-1

In 2009, 2.6 million people were newly infected with the retrovirus HIV. An EU-funded project is aiming to reduce the spread of HIV-1 infection through the development of microbicides for vaginal rectal use.

Improved infrastructure for mosquito research in Europe

The INFRAVEC project aims to reduce fragmentation of mosquito-related research in Europe by improving existing infrastructure facilities and coordinating joint research ventures. Project partners expect that the provision of genetic modification tools, bioinformatics analysis and controlled field experiments will expand mosquito research capacity in Europe.

The role of protease enzymes in IBD

A European consortium investigated the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), focusing especially on a group of protein-modifying enzymes. The discovery that bacterial proteases are implicated in IBD opens up new avenues of therapeutic interventions.

Plastic pipes have many advantages over pipes made from metals or concrete, such as good chemical resistance, low weight, low cost, and longer predicted service life, and are already used extensively for the transport of gas, water and chemicals. However their use in safety critical applications has been restricted by the lack of a validated inspection system being available to evaluate the joints.

When we consume emotions instead of food

Emotions play a decisive role in buying decisions, so in its sensory laboratory the AZTI-Tecnalia expert R&D centre in marine and foodstuff research is conducting studies to identify the emotions (desires, aspirations and motivations, among others) that influence the behaviour of consumers and habits associated with food. The aim is to orientate and focus the design of new products and establish them on the market on the basis of deeper knowledge about the emotions that lie behind them.
