New programme that simulates protein movements

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:19

Proteins are molecules involved in most of the biological processes that take place in our bodies. They have to move in order to fulfil many of their functions. For example, they open or close to keep and transport the molecules inside them. Until now, costly methods were the only available option for studying these movements: supercomputers were needed and the calculations took many days. The department of mechanics of the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao has now developed a shorter method.

Saws made of carbon

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:15

You can’t saw without producing sawdust – and that can be expensive if, for example, the “dust” comes from wafer manufacturing in the photovoltaic and semiconductor industries, where relatively high kerf loss has been accepted as an unavoidable, if highly regrettable, fact of life.

UCC offers world-class marine renewable energy test facilities free-of-charge

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:14

The Marine Renewable Infrastructure Network (MARINET), co-ordinated by University College Cork (UCC), is pleased to announce the opening of the fifth and final call on September 16th offering free-of-charge use of Irish and European leading test facilities for marine renewable energy R&D. Access to academic expertise is included under the call, with the EC funding usual costs.

When recycling equates with quality raw materials

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:13

Twenty five years ago, the German chemist Michael Braungart developed a new approach to recycling, now called "Cradle to Cradle" or "C2C" after the book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, which he and the American architect William McDonough published in 2002. Their basic idea is that the recycling process should start with the initial design of products.

Making cars that are lightweight and crash-safe

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:12

The auto industry needs to have a rethink: having turned out ever heavier cars year on year, in future vehicles will have to be lighter with lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. If auto makers do not dramatically reduce the average CO2 emissions of their cars, they will face hefty fines. That was determined by the European Commission in a new piece of legislation. One way to achieve a major cut in fuel consumption is through lightweight construction – in other words, cars have to slim down.

Sorting out top-class wines

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:11

The tasters are overjoyed: of over 100 wines that were submitted, this rosé is of exceptional quality. “Fresh, dry, pleasant – a real summer wine,” says one; “incredibly well rounded,” says another; “delicate,” says a third. They also praise its harmony and the balance between sugar and acidity. If a wine is to win jurors over so unanimously, not only must there be no hitches in the processes it goes through at the winery, but all weather-related factors need to stack up, too.

Juggling with multiple risks

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:10

Multiple disasters can have a cumulative impact leading to great human and financial loss. The awareness of all possible risks is of fundamental importance. A good example is the extent of the damage caused by the Kobe earthquake that hit Japan in April 2001.

Live streaming enjoyment for multi-screen applications

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:09

Whether you missed a TV show or a concert live recording of your favorite band: the Internet is a treasure trove of videos and all kinds of other multimedia content. Usually this content is streamed – that is, not saved on the computer, rather played directly over the browser in real time. But this method has a major drawback: if the available bit rate deteriorates, transmission quality suffers and the resulting video juddering and interruptions test the user’s patience. It can only be avoided if you match the video quality to the bit rate currently available.

In with antennas, out with cables

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:08

The pretty designer lamp on the table is meant to add charm to the room. If only the annoying cord wasn’t there, then you could also put the lamp in the center of the table when it suited you. In future, you will be able to do just that thanks to SUPA Wireless technology. SUPA stands for Smart Universal Power Antenna, and the technology removes the need for electric cables, whether for lamps, laptops or smartphones.

TU Delft coordinating European research on self-healing thermal barrier coatings

Σεπ 12, 2013 12:07

Researchers of TU Delft coordinate a large European research project on self-healing thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). These ceramic coatings enhance the gas turbine engine efficiency by allowing higher operation temperatures, saving fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. By using self-healing thermal barrier coatings, small cracks in the coating are repaired, thereby prolonging the lifetime of the coatings by 20-25% and significantly reducing the costs of maintainance.
