The hippocampus in memory and behaviour

The role of brain structures such as the hippocampus and associated neural circuits in regulating anxiety and memory is still poorly understood. The EU-funded HIPPOPROJECTION project was initiated to elucidate their role in anxiety and memory regulation using mice models.

New hover vehicle for fast oil spill recovery

Researchers have created an amphibious hovercraft able to respond quickly to oil spills and reduce the damage to coastlines and local economies. The cheap and efficient vehicle can reach areas that are inaccessible for conventional sea or land vehicles.

Lab-on-a-chip system for Lyme disease diagnosis

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common tick-borne infection in Europe with over 85 000 new cases annually. Treatment is often delayed or inadequate due to misdiagnosis, resulting in painful and disabling symptoms.

Safe storage underground for greenhouse gas

An EU-funded initiative is investigating the safe and permanent storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in basalt rocks. The aim of carbon sequestration is to mitigate climate change by preventing the release of large quantities of the greenhouse gas (GHG) into the Earth's atmosphere.

Space weather warning system

Orbiting satellites and electrical grids on Earth are vulnerable to space weather in the form of high-energy particles coming from the Sun. An EU-funded initiative is developing an alert system to forecast these geomagnetic storms.

Reworking the functionalities of bio-artificial tissue

Bio-artificial soft tissue can be used to treat burns and wounds as well as reduce animal testing in cosmetics and chemicals. However, integration of thicker tissues has not been successful due to insufficient nutrition and oxygen supply from poor vascularisation.

Heart-friendly dietary polyphenols

Increased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promote atherosclerosis and increase cardiovascular disease risk. Recent evidence suggests that polyphenols in red wine, strawberries and cocoa could inhibit VEGF at levels achievable through diet.

Preventing urinary tract infections

Indwelling catheters are used to collect urine samples and assess urine output accurately in patients so as to decipher severity of illness or injury. About 80 % of urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur due to use of indwelling catheters, increasing length of stay in hospitals as well as health care costs.
