Advanced nanotechnologies for diagnosing cancer

Αυγ 13, 2013 08:59

One promising area in the fight against cancer is the use of nanotechnology - the manipulation of matter at an atomic and molecular scale for specific medical aims.

The EU-funded NAMDIATREAM ('Nanotechnological Toolkits for Multi-Modal Disease Diagnostics and Treatment Monitoring') aims to contribute by using nanotechnology-based techniques to help in early detection. Cancer kills 1.7 million people each year in the EU. Around 3.2 million new cases are identified annually.

Mapping the changing nature of employment

Αυγ 13, 2013 08:55

While the crisis Europe is currently enduring has had a profound impact in many areas, one of the most concerning ones lies in its high unemployment rates. According to the latest Eurostat figures, over 26 million citizens in the EU-27 - 10.9% of the working-age population - were unemployed in June 2013. This is up 0.4% from the year before, a period over which US unemployment went down from 8.2 to 7.6%.

New method makes milk safer and tastier

Αυγ 13, 2013 08:49

EU-funded project SMARTMILK ('A novel system for the treatment of milk based on the combination of ultrasounds and pulsed electric field technologies ') has developed a non-thermal treatment to make raw milk safer, at the same time retaining its natural taste. The new technology may help the EU's dairy sector, which produces 130 billion litres of raw milk a year, become more competitive.

Assessing the cost of climate change and its wider impact on society

Αυγ 13, 2013 08:43

In today's globalised and more populated world, human impacts on the environment are becoming more complex and far-reaching - affecting everyone. With the world's population forecast to rise by 26 percent to around 9 billion by 2050, this trend is set to continue. Efficient responses to such global changes - social, economic and environmental - have become more critical than ever.

Innovative 3D integration technology could improve industrial processes

Αυγ 13, 2013 08:42

The latest gadgets hitting the market are smaller and faster than ever before, and rapidly-emerging 3D integration technology plays a major role in this evolution. The process, which consists in stacking 2D dies and connecting them in the 3rd dimension in order to speed up communication between chips, can be found in appliances such as miniaturised implantable medical devices and radio frequency devices found in mobile phones.

Radar exposing water leaks

Αυγ 12, 2013 22:50

A wide range of technologies deal with water leaks. But the most recent innovative solutions aim to be far more effective than any other prior technologies.

Water from underground pipes often leaks. Particularly, in countries with an antiquated underground waterpipe infrastructure. In the case of Greece, for example, leaks are estimated to constitute up to 50% of total consumption. Worse, many of these leaks are extremely difficult to find and repair due to the lack of detailed mapping of the network.
