Crops watering by phone

In Europe, irrigated agriculture is the chief water consumer for food production. Yet water resources are in limited supply. One way out of this problem is to take more care with the water we use, and reduce the estimated 60% water waste. Now, a phone app supplies farmers’ water thirsty crops with the right amounts of water at the right times, referred to in the field as irrigation scheduling.

The dosage of water and nutrients is often excessive for some of the crops’ requirement, as the most water demanding species set the standards. This happens because cost of irrigation water tends to be low in Europe. But now, water shortages are putting pressure on plant growers.

Novel biomarkers for renal cell cancer

Renal cell cancer (RCC) accounts for 80 % of renal or kidney cancers, the 10th most common cancer in the Europe. An EU-funded project that is aiming to obtain RCC biomarkers for use in diagnosis and therapy.

The root cause of most diseases can be traced to the molecular mechanisms inside our cells. ''Resolution enhanced microscopy for medical diagnostics'' (REMEDI) is an EU-funded project that aims to develop optical imaging technology that can see the workings within a cell at the molecular level.

Aligning anti-malarial drug research

Since 2007, the Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP) has focused on eliminating and ultimately eradicating malaria. An EU-funded initiative came to extend this work by identifying, in a logical and aligned way, robust research and development (R&D) programmes geared towards developing new tools, assays, and drugs.
