Pollution-born magnetites found in the brain could be linked to Alzheimer

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:34

After cancer, heart disease or acute respiratory infections, scientists may have just lift the veil on another consequence of pollution on human health – Alzheimer’s disease. They found microscopic magnetic particles from air pollution in human brains and linked them to the production of free radicals, which are themselves linked to the infamous form of dementia.

EU researchers show that mole rat society is based on age, not on caste

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:32

A new study has shown that individual mole rats perform different roles at different ages, and that age rather than caste behaviour accounts for the changes in their behaviour.

A proactive approach to ensuring long-term cybersecurity

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:31

To address the evolving cybersecurity threat, the EU-funded SHARCS and PQCRYPTO projects are developing the security paradigms, architectures and software needed to ensure our ICT systems are secure and trustworthy.

In today’s connected world, more and more of our day-to-day activities are dependent on cybersecurity. From banking to online shopping, telemedicine, mobile communication, cloud computing and the Internet of Things - society continues to put an increasing amount of sensitive and private information online.

“Big Data Europe” addresses societal challenges with data technologies

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:27

The Big Data Europe project has just released the first public version of its open source platform designed to to capture, manage and process the enormous amounts of data being created every day in order to derive meaningful results and make a difference to people’s lives. In 7 pilot studies, it is helping to solve societal challenges by putting cutting edge technology in the hands of experts in fields other than IT.

European researchers simplify optimal software execution on complex electronics

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:25

This week marks the completion of the SAVE project, which challenged a team of engineers and researchers to explore how complex hardware systems can more efficiently execute data intensive applications. SAVE has led to a number of innovations in hardware, software and operating system (OS) components. When integrated together, they can reduce application deployment costs and maximize usage of heterogeneous system computing units, resulting in energy efficiency being improved by up to 20%.

International epigenetic project BLUEPRINT delivers beyond expectation

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:23

Researchers from the EU-funded BLUEPRINT project join their international colleagues this week at the 2016 International Human Epigenome Consortium (IHEC) conference in Brussels to report the latest results in understanding blood cell development and blood disease.

BLUEPRINT received €30 million from the European Union to decipher the role of epigenetics in normal and diseased blood cells. Epigenetic effects alter the activity of genes without altering the DNA code, and play an important role in development and disease.

Extending the life span of wind turbines

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:21

The Spanish technology centre Cener gives an overview of the first results coming from the testing phase on the software, the blade configurations and the control strategies developed during the European Windtrust project

Today wind is the second largest renewable energy source in Europe, after hydro.

Electricity production by offshore wind turbines, however, is more expensive than by fossil fuel alternatives, and power generation by onshore turbines is still more expensive than by nuclear power plants.

Learning from beetles, nature’s master farmers

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:20

The sustainable production of pathogen-free crops is one of mankind’s most pressing concerns, given projected population growth and the threat posed by climate change to arable land. Incredibly, the study of a species of unassuming tree-dwelling beetles could hold some answers.

Clinical breakthroughs offer young cancer patients hope

Σεπ 09, 2016 11:17

An EU-funded project has made significant advances in treating a common form of childhood leukaemia, potentially saving thousands of young lives.

Researchers have developed new tests that could improve the diagnosis and treatment of a common form of childhood leukaemia. By tracking special structures in the blood released by cancerous acute lymphoblastic leukaemia cells, scientists believe they will be able to more accurately monitor and treat the disease, saving lives and making more efficient use of medical resources.
