A DNA vaccine against leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania and is endemic in developing countries. The LEISHDNAVAX project proposed to develop a vaccine against this parasite that uses DNA to simultaneously express five Leishmania immunogenic antigens.

Female crash test dummy for safer cars

Models for car safety testing have traditionally been designed on average male body metrics, despite evidence that females are more at risk for whiplash injuries. Researchers have now designed average female dummies to improve the design and safety of car seats, in the hope of reducing such injuries.

Stem cells for the injured heart

A European collaborative effort for the application of regenerative medicine for the infarcted heart investigated how to stimulate the endogenous repair mechanisms of the damaged tissue. To this end, scientists evaluated a plethora of cell types, growth factors and structural supports that improved tissue vascularisation and cardiac function.
