Improving the quality of commercial soil fungi

Symbiotic soil fungi have become an important part of sustainable agriculture, but commercially available fungi are of variable quality. A new research partnership has been set up to find genetic markers to produce a consistently high standard for the agricultural and other sectors.

Evaluating drug dose levels for children's anaemia

Beta-thalassaemia major, also called Cooley's anaemia, is a common genetic disorder that impairs haemoglobin production and affects about 60 000 children annually. Currently, transfusion therapy has to be coupled with iron chelation to remove excess iron accumulation from frequent transfusions and prevent potentially fatal multi-organ dysfunction.

Cortex development during mammalian embryogenesis

European scientists investigated the mechanisms that control neuronal migration and distribution during mammalian embryogenesis. Through novel tools it was possible to visualise the migration of specific neuronal populations and identify Ebf3 as an important molecule in maintaining cortex organisation.

Starch breakdown at night linked to plant drought resistance

Plants that grow in dry conditions have several adaptation strategies to survive the lack of water, including carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake at night rather than during the day. A recent project investigated the underlying genetics of this system to better understand how it is regulated.

Unifying theories of learning and dynamical systems

Researchers have taken a deterministic dynamical systems approach towards the fundamental development of the analysis of control and random dynamical systems. Backed by EU funding, work in this area led to the development of a common framework allowing for systematic interaction of the theories of learning and dynamical systems.
