Taking bioinformatics beyond the human genome

Over the last 20 years, the Human Genome Project and similar initiatives have produced huge volumes of data, as well as a broad range of related software solutions and a skilled workforce. A new initiative is now striving to coordinate these bioinformatics resources and expertise to study non-human genomes.

Protection from prions

Proteins in general are good for us; but mis-folded proteins known as prions that caused the infectious mad cow disease are a different story. An EU-supported project is studying prions in order to prevent a recurrence of mad-cow disease or variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).
