Colorectal cancer and lung cancer cause millions of deaths each year. The tumour-suppressor gene BARD1 is aberrantly expressed in several types of cancer and could be a diagnostic target for early cancer diagnosis in blood samples.

EU backs pioneering research on laser crystals

The European Union has contributed some EUR 3.1 million to a pioneering project which aims to substantially improve the thermo-optical effects occurring in a Ti:Sapphire laser crystal pumped at high powers.

Smoothly operating EU electricity grids

EU project explores the potential of clusters for cross-sector innovation

Clusters are regional hubs of competences in a given industry or technology branch, representing a critical mass of actors from R&D, industry and other institutional contexts. They are seen as an essential trigger in innovation policy to make European SMEs more competitive. Maintaining and improving the competitiveness of clusters in Europe is the core aim of CLUSTRAT, an EU-backed project.
