More Crops per Drop!

A solution is much needed to fight droughts and preserve crops. Researchers have now developed a device capable of checking the humidity in the soil, and releasing irrigation water as needed – just enough without wasting it. Scientists working under the EU funded research project FLOW-AID have worked hand-in-hand with farmers in six countries to test the system and exchange their knowledge.

Crops watering by phone

In Europe, irrigated agriculture is the chief water consumer for food production. Yet water resources are in limited supply. One way out of this problem is to take more care with the water we use, and reduce the estimated 60% water waste. Now, a phone app supplies farmers’ water thirsty crops with the right amounts of water at the right times, referred to in the field as irrigation scheduling.

Precision irrigation for ornamental plant

The dosage of water and nutrients is often excessive for some of the crops’ requirement, as the most water demanding species set the standards. This happens because cost of irrigation water tends to be low in Europe. But now, water shortages are putting pressure on plant growers.
