Coastal areas offer great challenges when balancing the need to protect natural habitats, with the requirement of human and economic activities. Dikes, for example, may not constitute the solutions of the future. That’s because they usually mean destroying the vulnerable habitats of seaside plants and animals. Other coastal features such as harbours need to remain accessible for shipping. Meanwhile, waterways have to be dredged. But these activities are usually harmful to nature.
