EU-funded researchers tasked with investigating international ethical debates around science and technology (S&T) have made some interesting observations.
Ethical debates often inform the policy decisions that drive innovation in the European Research Area (ERA). China and India, the two biggest emerging economies, have their own ethical considerations and are keen to develop their own knowledge economies. Europe is increasingly cooperating and competing with these two nations and therefore a mutual respect and understanding needs to be cultivated.
The first steps towards this are being taken as part of the EU-funded 'Global ethics in science and technology' (GEST) project. It is analysing the global dynamics of ethics and its role in S&T policies, with a focus on China, Europe and India.
