Measures are being taken to reinforce the research capability of Greece's Institute of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (IOPC) in areas where it is a recognised leader. The aim is to build its profile as a leading institute by building capacity and upgrading infrastructure.
The IOPC is part of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) and is located in Athens' Attiki region. It specialises in the design and synthesis of bioactive chemicals that have potential applications in medicinal chemistry, catalysis and materials science.
The EU-funded 'Advancement of research capability for the development of new functional compounds' (Arcade) project is unlocking the potential of the institute through various avenues. For example, during the first half of the project, eight experienced researchers were recruited.
The new researchers will play a key role in exploiting new equipment purchased with the help of Arcade. Two new mass spectrometers and a high-performance liquid chromatography machine will allow state-of-the-art analyses on the properties of proteins. An upgrade to the institute's nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray equipment will also increase its capacity to analyse biological and chemical compounds.
