Training Course “Responsible Research and Innovation in Horizon 2020 projects” (Turin, 8th-9th November 2018)

Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is becoming a hot topic in Europe, as it is potentially able to align scientific and technological progress with society's expectations. However, the basic principles of RRI often encounter difficulties in their application, especially in research projects' design and management, due to the ambiguity and generality of some statements.

The course aims at providing a framework of the Responsible Research and Innovation and its fundamental pillars, by presenting specific projects in H2020 dedicated to this area, as well as the proper management of issues linked to project financing, for each of the six pillars of RRI:
1) Open Access. This pillar is a key tool to make the research results transparent and accessible, in order to facilitate research evaluation and to help improve research quality and innovation. In order to achieve this strategic objective, it is assumed that research results which are funded by public funds are published online for free.
2) Public Engagement. This type of action assumes the involvement of the greatest possible number of actors - researchers, industry and SMEs, policy-makers, NGOs, civil society and citizens - in dealing with the main societal challenges. In the context of research and innovation, the Public Engagement pillar promotes political actions and agendas that can lead to a broader acceptance of the results of science and technology.
3) Governance. This action deals with the responsibility of the policy-makers in preventing harmful or immoral developments of research and innovation for society; cooperation with society is essential in order to define governance models aimed at responsible research and innovation.
4) Ethics. In order to respond adequately to societal challenges, research and innovation must respect fundamental rights and the highest ethical standards shared at European level, also in order to ensure greater relevance and acceptance of their results by society.
5) Gender Equality. This priority area is aimed at tackling the problem of under-representation of women in research, promoting initiatives aimed at modernizing the management of human resources (thus promoting the gender balance) and at including the gender variable in the implementation of research and innovation projects (i.e. gendered analysis).
6) Science Education. The main challenge of this pillar is to equip future researchers and other social actors with the knowledge and tools necessary to make them fully participatory and responsible in the research and innovation process.
