Trash-2-Cash: utilising zero-value waste textiles and fibres with design-driven technologies to create high quality products.

The overall motivation of the project is to reduce the use of virgin materials and the reduction of landfill by recycling used material through a design-driven approach, providing creative companies with new textile material solutions. Trash-2-Cash will provide regenerated textile fibres [polyesters and cellulosics] with similar properties to virgin materials, although with reduced associated environmental impact.

A design-driven cross-disciplinary consortium combining science, technology, design and end-user is formed for the development of creative products from waste textiles, waste paper fibres and industrial by-products and scraps. Involved partners represent the complete chain: academic and industrial designers defining the demands and initiating the materials development processes, researchers applying innovative technologies and industrial partners, both SMEs and larger enterprises, connected to various end-production sectors.

The work approach is a large iterative loop where new materials from waste streams are developed throughout three trans-disciplinary cycles: A) Design cycle; B) Application cycle; and C) Refinement cycle. Trash-2-Cash project started in 2015 and has now completed cycle A, promising to provide improved design concepts and first materials samples at the upcoming consortium meeting in November prior to the Circular Transitions Conference at Chelsea College in London.
