Not only plants, but also humans and animals need phosphorus, which is a building block of DNA. Many biological processes in our body can only take place if phosphorus atoms are also present. But farmers and industrial enterprises use so much of this element that soil is over-fertilized and waterways are contaminated.

A Basque consortium will develop a method to recycle up to 70% of vegetable, meat and dairy waste

Every day in Europe thousands of tonnes of food subproducts end up as waste because they are not put to use. The agrifood sector of the Basque Autonomous Community generates annually 4 million tonnes of organic material, by-products and waste; 113,000 tonnes are vegetable, meat and dairy waste, which has a high content in nutrients and compounds, and which could become raw material again, as ingredients for animal feed or for obtaining biofuels.

Detecting tumor markers easily

Benign growth, or cancer? Tumor markers in the blood help determine whether the patient is afflicted with a malign tumor and whether it is excreting markers more vigorously – involving highly specific proteins. An increased concentration in the blood provides one indication of the disease for physicians. However, it has been quite expensive in time and effort to detect the markers thus far. This is because all kinds of molecules and proteins are teeming in the blood.

Liver therapy with ultrasound

Tumor removal without a scalpel or x-rays is now possible due to a special type of ultrasound. Strong, concentrated ultrasonic waves are directed at the patient’s body in such a way that they heat and kill individual cancer cells. A new EU-project wants to transfer this emerging, non-invasive therapy to moving organs, specifically the liver. The Fraunhofer MEVIS Institute for Medical Image Computing Bremen is coordinating “TRANS-FUSIMO”.
