Diabetes – Malfunctioning brown fat and pancreatic beta cells

The dysfunction of pancreatic beta cells and brown adipose tissue (BAT) occurring in diabetes results from defective signal transduction and organelle function. A European initiative is identifying the molecular mechanisms involved and the cross talk between these two key tissues.

Chitosan tubes help regenerate peripheral nerves

Peripheral nerve damage is a serious cause of disability, with hundreds of thousands of individuals affected every year in Europe. An EU-funded consortium is developing an artificial nerve implant that promotes and supports the repair of damaged peripheral nerves across long distances.

Harmonising research through Joint Programming Initiatives

The Member States and the European Council have developed a set of 10 Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) to overcome the fragmentation of research activities, programmes and policies across Europe. Since the JPIs involve different institutions from different countries with different procedures, there is a need for framework conditions (FCs) facilitating harmonised planning and implementation.

Robots to automate detection of cracks

Crack detection in complex parts has hitherto been a manual task using magnetic particle inspection. An EU-funded project combined robotics and thermography to replace this decade-old method.

Within the scope of the EU-funded project THERMOBOT (Autonomous robotic system for thermo-graphic detection of cracks), scientists developed a new automated inspection process exploiting thermography for crack detection.
