New polymers designed at CiQUS explore their application in gene therapy

Scientists at the Centre for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials the University of Santiago de Compostela (CiQUS) and the University of Birmingham have developed a new and fast method for the preparation of novel DNA transporters across the lipid bilayers of the cell membrane. This work has been featured on the cover picture of the journal Angewandte Chemie

Tackling the challenge of replacing in vivo test methods for vaccine quality testing

European public and private organisations are collaborating in VAC2VAC, a new project funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI2)
VAC2VAC is a wide-ranging collaborative research project funded by IMI2 which aims to develop and validate quality testing approaches for both human and veterinary vaccines using non-animal methods. The initiative that started on 1 March 2016 aims to provide the data to support the ‘Consistency Approach’ for quality control of established vaccines. The current quality control approach for final products relies on in vivo methods.

Researchers from seven countries are working together to develop a modular exoskeleton for the lower limb made of soft materials as an assistive device for persons with low to moderate mobility restrictions.

Advancement in healthcare and medicine and other comforts of modernity make us live longer than our ancestors: the life expectancy of the average European nearly doubled during the last century. As life expectancy increases, however, so does the number of older people with mild to moderate disability.

The ingredients of good user experience of highly energy efficient buildings: a pinch of empowerment and a sprinkling of knowledge about the building’s features

Living or working in high energy-efficient buildings can be a great opportunity but users need to feel empowered. This means making them aware of the building features and allowing them to manage some of the appliances by themselves. In this way, disorientation or annoyance is avoided and people feel more in control.
