Towards energy-efficient rail networks

The energy consumption of urban rail systems is determined by a range of interdependent factors, which makes introducing new, energy-efficient technologies difficult. Researchers are now analysing the situation from every angle in order to create a decision-making tool for rail operators and public authorities.

Genetically modified tobacco plants as an alternative for producing bioethanol

Researchers at the NUP/UPNA-Public University of Navarre and the IdAB-Institute of Agrobiotechnology have conducted a study into genetically modified tobacco plants from which it is possible to produce between 20 and 40 per cent more ethanol; this would increase their viability as a raw material for producing biofuels.

An eco-friendly helicopter engine

EU-funded scientists developed a novel diesel engine for light helicopters as an alternative to conventional turboshaft engines. The technology demonstrated substantial reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.

How effective are policy indicators?

More and more, policymakers are using indicators to measure the success of public policy, but the role of these indicators in policymaking remains under-researched. In fact, researchers and practitioners have mainly focused on the technical details of indicator design.
