Study offers new hope for asthma sufferers

A new study supported by the EU-funded AIRPROM project has raised the prospect of a new treatment for asthma, a condition which afflicts 10 million people in Europe under the age of 45.

According to the European Lung Foundation, adult asthma causes on-going symptoms of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing. These symptoms can occur any time, but particularly at night or in the early morning.

Fighting botulism: new technique to process food

Combining high pressure and temperature for food processing could produce high quality products that stay fresh for weeks. But can it safely tackle deadly food borne illnesses such as botulism?

Food borne botulism is a rare, but potentially fatal disease. According to the World Health Organisation the toxins that cause the illness are some of the most lethal substances known. Patients die in 5% to 10% of cases.

Modelling superalloy behaviour to improve aircraft engine design

The MICROMECH project, part of the Sustainable and Green Engines (SAGE) Integrated Technology Demonstrators (ITD) of Clean Sky, has successfully developed a multi-scale computational tool to predict the mechanical behaviour of the Ni-based superalloys used in the hottest parts of aircraft engines. This model will help optimising the performance of new component designs.

Fishing the radioactivity out of nuclear waste

Building on previous EU-funded research into uranium, researchers have established a potential approach for safely removing radioactive elements from nuclear waste.

Cleaning up radioactive waste is difficult and often dangerous, especially when uranium is involved. In order to solve the problem of safely handling nuclear waste, a better understanding of uranium is needed.
