Development of height and weight in our early ancestors stand witness to the challenges they faced

Findings from the largest study of hominin body sizes, involving 311 specimens dating from 4.4m years ago right through to the modern humans that followed the last ice age, show unexpected patterns of change.

Humans as a species are clearly varied but at the same time they are genetically very similar. Understanding the mechanisms which drive this variation remains one of the significant challenges in anthropology. Support to research done through the ADAPT project is helping to explain one key variable – stature and body mass.

There is growing interest in crowdfunding as an alternative way to support projects focused on renewables. This comes at a time when the green energy sector is feeling the purse strings tighten in many European countries.

‘Virtual Artery’ takes us closer to improved prediction of treatment side-effects

By verifying a cell-based computer model that replicates the mechanics of muscle and tissue against in vitro tests, researchers have brought us a step closer to the era of personalised medicine.

Researchers have developed what they refer to as a ‘Virtual Artery’, a multiscale model incorporating data from physics, chemistry and biology. The team has managed to replicate single cell activity in the arterial wall (endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells) and in the flowing blood (red blood cells, platelets, white blood cells).
