Exploiting perennial miscanthus grasses for sustainable bioenergy production

Lignocellulosic biomass (obtained from grasses and trees) is a promising alternative to fossil fuels for sustainable energy or material production. Scientists are conducting extensive trials on miscanthus, a promising bioenergy crop, to exploit its full potential.

Probing the genetics of methane emissions from cows

Sheep, cows and other ruminants produce large amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs), particularly methane (CH4). New research is addressing this problem by using genomic technology to better understand the causes of high GHG production in ruminants.

A clear connection between sleep and neuronal changes

Scientists are studying real-time rhythmic changes in neuronal connections with in vivo imaging of transparent fish. The goals are to gain insight into the role of sleep in memory formation as well as developing a target for sleep disorder therapies.

Resolving micronutrient deficiencies in south-east Asia

Malnutrition, particularly in women of reproductive age and children (less than two years old), is not only detrimental to health in the long term but also life threatening. Over a million child deaths occur annually as a result of malnutrition from low levels of micronutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin A and iodine.
