A team of EU-funded researchers have developed ground-breaking technology to clear one of the biggest bottlenecks facing the development of ever more advanced computer chips: the costly and time-consuming process of fault testing and verification. Their holistic approach to detecting and solving errors in chips, or 'integrated circuits' (ICs), promises to accelerate chip production, save money and dramatically lower the cost of electronic equipment and devices.

Metabolic syndrome and diabetes type 2 are on the increase in the developed world. EU funding is being used to research the role of gut microbes in the control of obesity and related metabolic diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Advanced nanotechnologies for diagnosing cancer

One promising area in the fight against cancer is the use of nanotechnology - the manipulation of matter at an atomic and molecular scale for specific medical aims.

The EU-funded NAMDIATREAM ('Nanotechnological Toolkits for Multi-Modal Disease Diagnostics and Treatment Monitoring') aims to contribute by using nanotechnology-based techniques to help in early detection. Cancer kills 1.7 million people each year in the EU. Around 3.2 million new cases are identified annually.
