Hepatitis C virus - host interactions promote replication

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause severe liver disease. While treatment options are improving, they still have limitations and are not available globally. An EU-funded project 'Subversion of host trafficking machinery by hepatitis C virus to promote viral replication' (HCV HOST TRAFFICKING) has improved the understanding of the mechanism by which HCV replicates in humans.

EU forests under alien invasion threat

Climate change is set to increase the susceptibility of forest ecosystems to damage by alien invasive pests and pathogens. Scientists are investigating ways to counter this threat in order to prevent a decrease in primary production and hence yields as well as loss of vulnerable tree species.

Novel sensors for monitoring radiotherapy in real-time

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the EU and radiation therapy is used to treat more than 40 % of patients. Novel radiation monitoring technology promises to significantly increase the safety and efficacy of treatment.

Personalising medicine using diagnostic biomarkers

Customising treatment to match an individual’s genetic susceptibility to a particular disease is highly desirable. The MULTIMOD initiative worked to identify markers that could predict treatment response and thus design personalised therapy.
