Starch breakdown at night linked to plant drought resistance

Plants that grow in dry conditions have several adaptation strategies to survive the lack of water, including carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake at night rather than during the day. A recent project investigated the underlying genetics of this system to better understand how it is regulated.

Light–matter interactions are of great interest to scientists because they shed light on fundamental quantum effects. An EU-funded project is studying quasiparticles known as polaritons to improve our understanding of quantum phenomena.

Unifying theories of learning and dynamical systems

Researchers have taken a deterministic dynamical systems approach towards the fundamental development of the analysis of control and random dynamical systems. Backed by EU funding, work in this area led to the development of a common framework allowing for systematic interaction of the theories of learning and dynamical systems.

New weapons in the war against microbes

New antimicrobial compounds are needed as bacteria become resistant to currently available drugs. Addressing this pressing issue, the 'New antimicrobials' (NAM) project explored new sources and techniques for developing novel antimicrobials and mechanisms behind their actions.
