Monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) are of increasing importance in the treatment of cancers and autoimmune conditions such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, some Mabs are more effective than others in targeting diseased cells.

Blocking resistance to radiation therapy in cancerous cells

Scientists demonstrated for the first time specific inhibition of the Velcro site, a protein–protein binding site critical to resistance to radiation in cancerous cells. This opens the way to important new routes for targeted cancer therapy.

Metal trafficking in plant cells

Fluorescent sensors are the best tools for monitoring the dynamics of metals in living cells. The main aim of an EU-funded project was to apply the sensors to monitor the in vivo dynamics of transient metals in plant cells.

New drug targets for neurodegeneration

Health costs associated with dementia are over EUR 55 billion per year in Europe alone, which will rise with an increasing European elderly population. The EU-funded NEUROPRO project has elucidated the role of prolyl oligopeptidases (PREPs) in neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) to restore normal function and find novel targets for therapy.
