Ocean currents help predict climate change

Monitoring changes in worldwide ocean currents is an important way to track and predict climate change. Researchers have established an observation network to better understand and keep track of these fluctuations, and to assess whether these changes constitute a climate change risk.

Achieving cost-effective laser manufacturing through cutting-edge inspection

The cost-effective manufacture and validation of miniature components for the aerospace and automotive sectors has taken a significant step forward thanks to a recently-completed EU-funded project. A series of systems for the rapid in-line inspection of laser powder deposited layers has been developed and trialled, using cutting edge non-destructive testing techniques.

iPhone app offers individual hearing support

Oldenburg. Transmission losses and background noise can considerably impair speech intelligibility when making calls on a cell phone – particularly for people who suffer from hearing loss. Hearing research scientists have now developed an app for the iPhone that improves speech intelligibility for internet phone calls made using Voice over IP technology. In addition to allowing adjustment of loudness and sound settings to meet individual preferences, the app is also able to compensate for hearing loss.

The EU-funded project 'Microfluidic chip' (MICROFLUCHIP) devised a microfluidic chip to generate, measure and sort droplets that contain microparticles or cell suspensions.
