Perhaps the concept of the 'bounty of the seas' requires extension to include marine fungi. While not particularly appetising, these organisms are proving very beneficial to health.

The role of immunoglobulin D in autoimmunity

A European study is working to address gaps in knowledge of the role of immunoglobulin D (IgD) in autoimmunity onset. Literature reviews emphasise the importance of IgD autoantibodies and deregulated IgD-producing B cells in the development of inflammation-associated autoimmunity.

Stem cell replacement therapy for reflux nephropathy.

An EU-funded project has investigated the potential of stem cell-based replacement therapy for prevention of end stage renal disease. The work involved the design of a new type of magnetic nanoparticle to label the stem cells for in vivo tracking.
