Securing the future of profitable ocean ecosystems

Ecosystems in the North Atlantic Ocean are crucial for the ecological, economic and societal health of both Europe and North America. An EU-funded project has been set up to analyse the basin-scale processes impacting these ecosystems, from natural climate change to anthropogenic pressures.

The right atmosphere for climate research

There is a close link between air pollution and climate change, but the processes involved are not well understood, which hinders mitigation strategies. An EU-funded project hopes to clarify how air pollutants affect the climate.

An organism's genotype defines its cellular phenotype and the response to environmental conditions. Based on this, a large European consortium worked to unveil the complex interplay between genetic variability and the response to oxidative stress.

New defences against hospital infections

The spread of infection in hospitals continues to pose a substantial risk to patients. Research completed recently has identified new control measures for one of the most feared 'superbugs' – methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
