Juan Ignacio Latorre-Biel, lecturer at the Public University of Navarre (NUP/UPNA), has received the prize for the best scientific contribution during the 2nd International Food Operations & Processing Simulation Workshop, FoodOPS, held in Larnaca (Cyprus). The award-winning work proposes an innovative methodology in the agri-food sector based on a mathematical model that assists in decision-making at a facility devoted to the cultivation and production of the common mushroom (Agaricus bisporus)

On-chip observation of THz plasmons

Researchers developed a technique for imaging THz photocurrents with nanoscale resolution, and applied it to visualize strongly compressed THz waves (plasmons) in a graphene photodetector. The extremely short wavelengths and highly concentrated fields of these plasmons open new venues for the development of miniaturized optoelectronic THz devices (Nature Nanotechnology DOI: 10.1038/NNANO.2016.185)

The overall motivation of the project is to reduce the use of virgin materials and the reduction of landfill by recycling used material through a design-driven approach, providing creative companies with new textile material solutions. Trash-2-Cash will provide regenerated textile fibres [polyesters and cellulosics] with similar properties to virgin materials, although with reduced associated environmental impact.
