University College Dublin, Energy Institute together with the Irish Embassy in Paris will host a seminar entitled “Energy Systems Integration: An Innovative approach to a Low Carbon, Sustainable Economy” to take place on Monday, 7th December, in the margins of the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21). The seminar will aim to raise awareness about the need to build a shared understanding of the research required to attain an integrated and sustainable energy system through international collaboration in support of the COP21 targets.

Energy System Integration (ESI) is the process of optimizing energy and related systems across multiple pathways and physical scales. Well integrated energy systems reduce emissions, are energy efficient, economic and sustainable. ESI is a prerequisite in delivering the core elements of climate change mitigation: a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and dramatic improvements in energy efficiency. This is reflected in the importance accorded to ESI in recent international public research and policy initiatives such as the EU SET Plan Integrated roadmap, the Clean Energy Ministerial, the US DOE research laboratory complex , and soon a Joint Programme within European Energy Research Alliance.

The seminar will provide an opportunity for policy makers and potential partners to contribute to identifying ways in which ESI research outcomes can best deliver a low carbon, sustainable economy and how an international collaborative effort can be resourced. The participants will have the opportunity to outline their own role in the process of energy system integration testing and implementation, while a strong emphasis will be given in the discussion on the regulatory framework necessary for technology transfer and capacity building.

UCD is part of an international effort to build collaboration in ESI research which can provide evidence for energy policy options. This initiative is supported by leading US energy research laboratories (NREL, PNNL and EPRI) and top European universities including KU Leuven (BE), DTU (DK), and Imperial College (UK) who are already collaborating in the Intenational Institute for Energy Systems Integration.

The seminar will take place at 16:00 on Monday 7th December 2015 at the Embassy of Ireland, 12 Avenue Foch, 75116 Paris, France. The seminar promises to be interesting and informative with confirmed speakers including Professor Mark O’Malley (Director Energy Institute, UCD), Doug Arent (Executive Director of the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, NREL), Fabien Roques (Senior Vice President in the Paris office of Compass Lexecon), Sean O’Driscoll (CEO, Glen Dimplex) and Sean Kelly (MEP). The seminar will conclude with a reception.

If you would like to attend this seminar, please express an interest by return email to energy@ucd.ie
Spaces are limited so please express an interest promptly. A finalised agenda will follow shortly.
