Submarine power cables are gaining a prominent role in sharing electricity between regions or different countries. Efficient transmission systems save energy, reduce pollution and secure power grids

The deepest submarine power cable in the world runs in the Tyrrhenian sea, 1,600 metres below sea level. It connects Sardinia with the Italian mainland. The project is called SA.PE.I and links the converter stations of Fiume Santo, near Sassari, and Latina.

The NEWBITS project aims to gain a better understanding of the dynamically changing conditions affecting C-ITS innovations, and to derive recommendations supporting more efficient policies. Nine project partners are working on new business models that are designed to accelerate the market deployment of C-ITS and render its implementation more sustainable. A new report is discussing barriers and enablers.

A new plant for producing aerogels – highly porous nanoparticles – has been built in the technology centre at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). The plant, jointly financed by the EU research project “NanoHybrids” and by industry, enables prototype aerogels to be produced for direct industrial tests for the first time.The skill and experience of TUHH’s technical staff made it possible to build the plant on site.

A prime-boost Ebola vaccine regime has induced a persistent antibody response of at least one year in 100% of the healthy volunteers. Partners behind the development of the vaccine include the EU’s Innovative Medicines Initiative.
