Hopping around Wi-Fi networks

European researchers have developed a novel transport scheme for multi-hop wireless networks (MWNs). Much-needed applications will be used in areas such as emergency services and public safety systems.

MWNs are networks where end-to-end paths consist of several consecutive, wireless hops. This new architecture enables a number of new information and communications technology (ICT) applications while improving the performance of existing ICT services.

Science cafes online

Science cafes (SCs) provide an online forum for discussing science. An EU programme was set up to look after them.

The EU-funded project 'The science cafes network' (SCICAFE) created a network of online SCs in various cities across Europe and abroad. These took the form of sophisticated chat rooms for the discussion of science.

Global cooperation at its best

A new drive to involve the world's developing nations in EU-funded projects is bearing fruit, thanks to the bloc's International Cooperation (INCO) programme and its national access points.

The EU's worldwide network of National Contact Points (NCPs) has fostered global cooperation with the bloc and is building valuable bridges through joint partnerships, innovation and investment. These efforts have been supported by the EU's INCO programme, which ensures nations other than EU Member States and Associated States can also access opportunities and partnerships with the bloc.

Sphingolipids — understanding structure and function

Sphingolipids are integral in maintaining our cell membrane structure and regulating metabolism and other key functions. Lipid deregulation can cause diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and Alzheimer's disease.

The EU-funded 'Systems biology of lipids metabolism' (SBLIME) project was initiated to characterise and investigate the molecular mechanisms of sphingolipids. Researchers employed a systems biology approach along with high-resolution chromatography and mass spectrometry for the analysis of global and lipid metabolism as well as biosynthesis pathways.
