BBMRI-ERIC seminar: "BBMRI-ERIC's role and contribution to the implementation of the Cloud"

Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium (BBMRI-ERIC) will on 2 February 2017 in Brussels organise a seminar entitled “Future challenges: BBMRI-ERIC'S role and contribution to the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud” to demonstrate the research infrastructures’ role and contribution to building the European Open Science Cloud.
The European Commission in 2016 announced its aim to build the European Open Science Cloud, which will provide a virtual environment to store, share, and reuse data across borders and disciplines. The Commission Communication on the European Open Science Cloud foresees that the “Commission will work with Member States to connect the priority European research infrastructures to the European Open Science Cloud”. BBMRI-ERIC – as one of the largest biomedical research infrastructures in Europe – is therefore committed and keen to contribute to a successful implementation of the European Open Science Cloud.

Health research today is increasingly dependent on data-driven research infrastructures in which data can be stored, curated, accessed, and possibly enriched by correlating it with different sources. Particularly for human data, protection of privacy of individuals contributing their personal potentially privacy-sensitive data into research for the benefit of society should be handled with care.

The objective of the seminar is to examine the concept of open science by acknowledging the need for more and better sharing of the data linked to biological samples to make science more efficient, while promoting and enhancing the understanding of the specificities and limitations for medical and health research and data in the open science context. Moreover the seminar will explore the position of biobanking in the European Open Science Cloud and attempt to address the issues related to storing, access, and sharing of the data linked to biological samples, regulatory compliance, including the recent modernised data protection rules, trust and security challenges, data quality and interoperability, and skills and capacity.

The event, which will bring together policy-makers, representatives from research infrastructures, academia, and industry, patient advocacy groups, and other interested stakeholders, will look at future perspectives in advancing health research and delivering personalised medicine in Europe and consider the required data structures and processes. The seminar will also highlight the patient and industry engagement in the process.

The detailed agenda will be available shortly.

BBMRI-ERIC (http://bbmri-eric.eu/) is a pan-European research infrastructure which provides access to quality controlled human biological samples, such as blood, tissues, cells or DNA, and associated clinical and research data. It aims to establish, operate and develop a pan-European distributed research infrastructure of biobanks and biomolecular resources in order to facilitate the access to resources as well as facilities and to support high quality biomolecular and medical research. BBMRI-ERIC operates on a non-economic basis.

BBMRI-ERIC is set up as a distributed research infrastructure in most, if not all European member states. Including the United Kingdom as its latest member, BBMRI-ERIC consists as of today of 19 member states and one international organisation (IARC), making it one of the largest research infrastructures for health research in Europe.
