EU-funded scientists are developing a novel knowledge-based tool to automatically generate build scenarios for small batches of high-tech products. It evaluates various materials and process technologies to optimise manufacturing.
With the increasing demand for tailor-made or small batch pieces, additive layer manufacturing (ALM) has become the production method of choice. ALM, as the name suggests, builds up a part by adding layers such that complex geometries can be achieved with next to no scrap. The parts are specified via a computer-aided design file whose data is fed directly to the processing machinery.
