The harsh offshore environment with heavy rain causes the blades to erode, leading to a significant reduction in efficiency and energy production. To overcome this problem, new technologies are being tested under the EU-funded WINDTRUST project. The new coating lowers the costs of maintenance and downtime.
Offshore wind turbines play an increasingly important role in renewable power generation. In 2015, for the second year in a row, Denmark set the world record for wind power, producing 42% of its electricity from wind turbines.
